National Diabetes Awareness Month: Joining the Effort to Take Diabetes to Heart

November is an important month for us here at Omada. Not only do we get excited about Thanksgiving, time with family and friends, and football ramping up, but November is also a time  to recognize the most crucial issue to us here at Omada: diabetes.

November is National Diabetes Awareness Month, and with today marking World Diabetes Day, it’s an opportunity for people across the country to come together and bring attention to diabetes. The theme of this year’s  campaign, “Taking Diabetes to Heart,” speaks to the strong correlation between cardiovascular disease and diabetes. According to the American Heart Association, adults with diabetes are nearly twice as likely to die from heart disease or stroke as people without diabetes.

At Omada, we are well aware of the prevalence of comorbidities, such as heart disease, in people battling diabetes. It’s why we take a holistic approach with our program – addressing the whole person and not just the condition. It’s also why we decided to expand our program beyond prediabetes and Type 2 diabetes to address troubling side effects such as cardiovascular disease, obesity, and the emotional toll that can affect patients with chronic diseases. Our digital behavior change program is personalized to support people at risk for or living with, chronic conditions as their needs evolve.

When it comes to addressing heart disease and diabetes, we know the implications. Omada works with health plans across the country to help pinpoint which members are likely to develop type 2 diabetes or heart disease, and then pull those at risk back from the brink of chronic disease. Our program combines a CDC approved curriculum, wireless tracking, data-empowered health coaches and peer support to help at-risk patients create healthy patterns for life.

These cardiovascular efforts can go a long way in helping employers, and health plans save money by preventing chronic disease in the first place. Take a look at some of these staggering numbers and statistics that are outlined on our website.

5/10 – Are on the cusp of developing a preventable, chronic disease, specifically Type 2 diabetes and heart disease

Type 2 diabetes and heart disease are two of the most expensive to manage

1/10 has heart disease – This person will cost an employer 5x as much as a healthy employee

1/10 has Type 2 diabetes – This person will cost an employer 2.5x as much as a healthy employee and work three fewer weeks per year

At Omada, we help health plans and employers tackle Type 2 diabetes and heart disease in the most engaging, effective, and scalable way. Whether it’s through our program or our holistic, integrated care program – Omada is helping members improve their lifestyle and reduce their risk of complications from chronic disease.

We are confident in our approach as the innovation leader in our industry and as a true digital care provider. And during November, we’re joining the fight to raise awareness. During National Diabetes Month and throughout every day of the year, Omada is committed to delivering effective, meaningful care and outcomes at scale – and truly drive lasting change for those battling chronic disease.
